London is the capital, it is also the biggest city of both Great Britain and England. Its name comes from breton « Llyn-Din » ( Fort Lake).

This is the most populous city by administrative area in the European Union, with an official population of 7.5 million (as of mid-2006), and has a metropolitan population of between 12 and 14 million. The Green City is divided in thirty-three boroughs The central parts of London burnt from Sunday, 2 September to Wednesday, 5 September 1666.

London will welcome the Olympic Games in 2012.


Généralité History


Londinium was created around two millenniums ago by the Romans, about seven years after the conquest of Britain AD 43. Early Roman London occupied a relatively small area of the size off Hyde Park.


During the 2nd century Londinium replaced Colchester as the capital of Roman Britain .

Political instability from the 3rd century led to a slow decline. The defensive London Wall built in between 190 and 225 AD.

By the 5th century the Roman Empire was in rapid decline, and in 410 AD the Roman occupation of Britain came to an end. Following this, the Roman city went into rapid decline and by the end of the century had been practically abandoned.

Culture London and its surrounding Home Counties have spawned popular rock star as The Who, Iron Maiden, The Rolling Stones and David Bowie.
