La Ford Thunderbird est à l'origine (1955) un modèle sport à deux places. Dès 1958, elle devient une lourde voiture à quatre places. Le nom Thunderbird fait référence à la mythologie indienne : il s'agit de l'oiseau-tonnerre censé apporter pluie et fertilité.
