A l'âge de seize ans, il rejoint le cirque des frères Ringling comme assistant à l'entraînement des éléphants. Il le quittera deux plus tard après avoir été griffé par un tigre, pour rejoindre New York où il se fait connaître à Broadway.
Il commence sa carrière d'acteur au cinéma en 1913, avec plusieurs films où il joue le rôle de Sweedie.
Wallace Beery a été marié deux fois, avec Gloria Swanson d'abord, puis avec Rita Gorman.
