Giannina Braschi (5 février 1953 à San Juan, est considérée par beaucoup comme l'un des plus grands poètes nés à Porto Rico, et avec Julia de Burgos et Gabriela Mistral, comme l'un des plus grands poètes d'Amérique latine. Braschi écrit directement en anglais, espanol et Spanglish. She is credited with writing the first Spanglish novel YO-YO BOING! (1998) and the anti-imperialist poetry trilogy "Empire of Dreams" ([Yale], 1994), which chronicles the Latin American immigrant's experiences in the United States. "For decades, Dominican and Puerto Rican authors have carried out a linguistic revolution," noted The Boston Globe, and "Giannina Braschi, especially in her novel YO-YO BOING!, testify to it."[1] Her work is a "synergetic fusion that marks in a determinant fashion the lived experiences of U. S. Hispanics." [2]

Born in San Juan, Giannina Braschi moved to New York City in 1977. She holds a PhD in Spanish Literature from the State University of New York, and has taught literature at Rutgers University, Queens College, and Colgate University. She is considered a post-modern radical poet and novelist--and the leading woman of the Nuyorican movement in New York City.

Braschi's early writings were scholarly in nature and focused on the titans of the Spanish Golden Age, as well as the vanguard poets of Latin America and Spain. She published a book on the Romantic poet Gustavo Adolfo Becquer and essays on Cervantes, Garcilaso, Vallejo, Juan Ramon Jimenez, and Garcia Lorca. She later became obsessed with the dramatic and philosophical works of French, German, Polish, Irish, and Russian authors. Though categorized as novels, her later works are experimental in style and format, and celebratory of foreign influences. In the 50th anniversary edition of Evergreen Review, Braschi notes that she considers herself "more French than Beckett, Picasso, and Gertrude Stein" and believes that she is the "granddaughter of Alfred Jarry and Antonin Artaud, bastard child of Samuel Beckett and James Joyce, half-sister to Heiner Müller, kissing cousin of Tadeus Kantor, and lover of Witkiewicz". Giannina Braschi a assisté à l'effondrement des tours du World Trade Center en septembre 2001 à New York et écrit depuis un très long texte poétique et diabolique qui est en voie d'être terminé et publié.

« C’est la fin du monde. La situation m’excite. Bon, si tout le monde doit mourir, mourir violemment, merde ! Qu’est-ce que j’en sais après tout ? Est-ce que c’est une bombe atomique, la fin du monde, la fin du millénaire ? Plus besoin d’avoir peur d’être virée, pour des fautes de frappe, des retards, pour digressions ou récessions, et quelle façon d’être virée, de partir en flammes, sans ses deux semaines de préavis et sans ses six mois d’allocations chômage et sans congés maladie, vacances ou congés maternité. Sans un mot d’explication. Un matin éblouissant - quand la nature est indifférente à l’avenir de l’humanité, voici venir le point de non retour quand le ciel ensoleillé devient noir, un sale trou - de nuit - avec des papiers, des ordinateurs, des fenêtres, des corps, des murs, des briques et de gens courant et criant : Allez au diable ! Gardez vos boulots ! Sauve qui peut ! Je veux ma vie d’indépendantiste ! Je veux commander mon entreprise ! Je veux me mettre à mon compte ! Mais je regarde mon compte en banque et je suis à sec. Je ne peux pas abandonner. Pas encore en tous cas. Je me regarde dans la glace. Je vois que je vieillis, que je n’ai pas eu d’avancement. Je devrais être mon propre patron - parce que je suis bonne - et mon patron le sait, c’est pourquoi il est tout le temps sur mon dos, qu’il ne me lâche pas la bride, qu’il me chronomètre. Est-ce que je suis sortie tard la nuit dernière, est-ce pour cela que je suis en retard ce matin, hagarde et stressée et que je ne sais pas quoi faire ? Qu’est-ce que je dois faire ? Prendre un flingue et me flinguer - ou avaler des somnifères ? Pourquoi leur donner raison ? Vous voyez bien, une personne compliquée, un trublion. Toujours sur ses gardes. Pourquoi êtes-vous sur la défensive - qu’ils disent toujours - personne ne vous attaque. Alors je dis, j’ai été maltraitée, mal orientée, mal payée, pas écoutée, pas prise sérieusement, niée et dépouillée... »
