La course autour du monde en équipage en monocoques avec escales.

Inspirée par le navigateur solitaire, Francis Chichester, en 1967, la première Whitbread a eu lieu le 8 septembre 1973. Elle comportait 4 étapes.

Eric Tabarly, sur Pen Duick VI, remporte la deuxième étape en temps réel, mais ayant dématé dans la première, et dématant à nouveau dans la troisième, il ne peut figurer au classement général.

[modifier] Edition 1997-98

• Pour la première fois seuls des yachts de la classe de W60 participent à la régate, et le classement se fait avec un système de points pour revaloriser aussi les plus courtes étapes.
• Pour améliorer l'utilisation médiumnique, il y a neuf étapes.
• Volvo se présentait aussi pour la première fois comme sponsort du trophée. La régate s'appelait ainsi Whitbread round the world race for Volvo the Trophy.
