Sun Ra (né Herman Poole Blount) est un compositeur et pianiste de jazz américain né à Birmingham, Alabama, le 22 mai 1914 et décédé le 30 mai 1993. Il est connu pour ses compositions et ses performances phénoménales autant que pour l'étrange "philosophie cosmique" qu'il prêchait.

À la tête de son Arkestra,il a enregistré plus de deux cents albums, le plus souvent sur sa marque "Saturn" depuis la fin des années 1950.

Il a inspiré Jean-Claude Mézières et Pierre Christin, dans les aventures de Valérian, pour le personnage de Sun Rae dans La Cité des eaux mouvantes.
