Rickson Gracie (prononcer Hickson) est né au Brésil le 20 novembre 1958. Il est considéré par beaucoup comme une légende du Ju Jitsu, un des meilleurs si ce n'est le meilleur dans cette discipline, toutes catégories et toutes générations confondues, un peu comme Jordan a pu l'être au basket-ball. Il a une ceinture noire 7e degré en Jiu Jitsu Brésilien, fait partie de la fameuse famille Gracie, est le fils de Hélio Gracie, le frère de Rorion et le demi frère de Royce et de Royler Gracie. Il a gagné le tournoi Vale Tudo Japan en 1994 et en 1995, faisant écho aux exploits de Royce à l'UFC. Il est vénéré par nombre d'internautes et de pratiquants de tout niveaux, et tout le monde attend avec impatience ses rares apparitions.

Il est difficile de garder un ton encyclopédique lorsqu'il s'agit de Rickson Gracie et les rumeurs et les controverses vont bon train.

Pour ce qui est du palmarès officiel en free fight, le record de Rickson Gracie est de 11-0-0. Vous pouvez trouver le détails de ses combats sur sa fiche de sherdog.

Et puis il y a son fameux record non officiel, qui a fait couler tellement d'encre sur les forums du monde entier : plus de 400 victoires pour aucune défaite et aucun match nul. Le mythe du combattant invincible était né...

De nombreuses investigations ont eu lieu dont voici les conclusions :

  • Lors de matchs ou de combats (officiels ou non), au fond d'un dojo, sur une plage ou un ring, toutes disciplines confondues (tournoi de Jiu Jitsu, Lutte, Sambo, no hold barred, défis ...), Rickson aurait bel et bien remporté plus de 400 victoires.

Néanmoins certains de ses combats n'étant pas datés il est dur de dire si ceux-ci ont eu lieu ailleurs que dans son imagination.

  • Une rumeur disant que Rickson Gracie et Marco Ruas avaient fait un match nul s'est apparemment révélée être un mensonge (les deux hommes ne s'étant a priori jamais affrontés).
  • Il aurait gagné tous les titres possibles en poids moyen et en toute catégorie lors des championnats de Jiu Jitsu organisé au Brésil pendant quasiment 2 décennies. Cette information est invérifiable (ou fausse) car les archives des résultats de tournois ne vont pas avant 1996.
  • Rickson se nomme détenteur d'un titre de champion du monde de Jiu-Jitsu Brésilien. L'ennui c'est qu'il ne dit pas lors de quelle(s) année(s) il aurait remporté ce(s) titre(s). Le fait qu'il ne donne pas de dates, que les archives des championnats mondiaux de cette discipline remontent seulement jusqu'à 1996, et le fait qu'il ait clamé être le champion du monde avant la création des-dits championnats pourraient sous-entendre que Rickson aurait arrangé la vérité à son avantage. Il n'a cependant jamais été vu, battu, en Jiu-Jitsu Brésilien.
  • Un combattant Japonais, suivi par une caméra de télévision Japonaise, s'était rendu à la salle de Rickson pour le défier. Son audace ne fut pas récompensée puisqu'il perdit le combat et termina de surcroit à l'hôpital.
  • Rickson est une légende vivante en Jiu Jitsu Brésilien et il est un des meilleurs au monde dans cette discipline sans aucun doute, il est sûrement moins fort en combat libre quoi qu'il reste également officiellement invaincu dans cette discipline.
  • Rickson a bel et bien perdu un combat contre Ron Tripp en 1993 lors du championnat de Sambo des États-Unis (Norman, Oklahoma). Le combat dura environ 47 secondes. Ron Tripp projetta Rickson au sol avec un Uchimata (nom d'une prise de judo) et les épaules de Rickson touchèrent le sol, ce qui correspond à un "Ippon" et donne automatiquement la victoire d'après les règles de Sambo Américaines qui étaient appliquées pendant ce tournoi. Rickson dit qu'il n'était pas au courant de cette règle (ce dont on peut douter, un combattant professionnel s'informant des règles en vigueur avant chaque combat/tournoi) car sinon il ne se serait jamais laissé projeter...

En résumé Rickson Gracie a relevé et remporté un grand nombre de défis. Les détracteurs de sa carrière en MMA soulignent néanmoins qu'il n'a jamais réellement affronté les meilleurs combattants du moment, se contentant des adversaires "faciles" qu'on lui opposait et qui étaient visiblement loin de pouvoir rivaliser avec lui. Pour ce qui est de son fameux record non-officiel, Rickson a effectivement remporté plus de 400 victoires mais très majoritairement contre des adversaires assez faibles.

La fascination collective que son record avait déclenché est de moins en moins forte car on sait aujourd'hui que Rickson a déjà été vaincu une fois et que son record est principalement basé sur des victoires faciles. C'est pourquoi tous attendent actuellement son retour, cette fois contre les meilleurs combattants du circuit MMA (Fedor Emelianenko et Wanderlei Silva dans leurs catégories respectives).
