James Kochalka

James Kochalka, né le 26 mai 1968 à Springfield (Vermont) est un auteur de bande dessinée et un musicien américain. Sa mère affirme qu’il a commencé à dessiner avant d’apprendre à marcher, si bien, qu’à 9 ans, il avait déjà fait son premier livre de bande dessinée. Il est, aujourd’hui, l’un des auteurs les plus prolifiques de sa génération et partage son temps entre bande dessinée et cinéma d’animation. James Kochalka, qui est aussi un rocker patenté, a déjà composé 4 CD de rock low-fi, dont un incroyable opéra- rock. Il réside à Burlington dans le Vermont avec sa femme Amy, ses fils Eli et Oliver et leur chat Spandy.

American elf est un projet titanesque qui tient davantage de la performance artistique que du journal en bande dessinée. James Kochalka est certainement le premier auteur à mener une telle tentative : englober la totalité de ce qui fait un être humain et toucher à son essence même... L’entreprise a débuté en octobre 1998 et se poursuit aujourd’hui. L’auteur produit un strip de quatre cases par jour et le diffuse contre un abonnement modique sur Internet. De la contrainte et de l’accumulation de ces fragments quotidiens, souvent hilarants, absurdes, poétiques, parfois anecdoctiques ou encore scatologiques... naît une œuvre puissante, singulière et totalement unique.
