(Fragments of the discussion from the Oracle page (Wikipédia:Oracle/semaine 1 2006), which will hopefully inspire someone to revise the article slightly, and assure them that some of the points made there are correct)

1. I wonder about the "Costentin" bit -- Encyclopedia Britannica 1911 cites "Costantin" (or "Cotentin") -- is there a typo in the title of this article, or is there a source for that spelling and perhaps Britannica got it wrong?

2. Brittanica also suggests "Anne-Hilarion", a single name. Was that true?

3. Brittanica writes

(...) was the son of César de Cotentin, or Costantin, who held offices in the household of the king and of the prince of Condé.

I understand that Mme César was "une La Rochefoucauld" at the same time (after your article). Now, the father: the prince of Condé, who "étant mort alors qu'il est agé de cinq ans". Your article says he was "un Condé". I have located one prince of Condé who died when Anne-Hilarion was 4: Henri II de Bourbon-Condé -- is that true?? --Bansp 3 janvier 2006 à 14:06 (CET)

Hi,

1. Costentin seems the correct spelling. It is attested by Saint-Simon.

2. This is a tricky question :) The hyphen is used on manuscripts but it holds no signification. You would be for instance Tom-Dick-Harry Bansp. Some French editions choose to preserve it: my edition of Saint-Simon spells Tourville's name Anne-Hilarion but it doesn't mean it's a single name, on the contrary.

3. Tourville's father was not a Condé and the French article is wrong. Saint-Simon states that Tourville's father was his own father's retainer. As the prince of Conde (Louis II of Bourbon) was marrying his son, he asked Saint-Simon's father for a gentleman of trust, and Saint-Simon senior sent him Tourville Sr. Jastrow|? 3 janvier 2006 à 15:08 (CET)

Thanks for the prompt answer! :-) You mean of course Louis de Rouvroy, duc de Saint-Simon, right? He should be more believable than Britannica, I agree (though it's sad to see Britannica err so much, sigh). And thank you for the explanation of the hyphen's (non-)significance! I wasn't aware of that. So, the Fronde engagement of the family might still be true, given that Tourville Sr. was Claude de Rouvroy, duc de Saint-Simon's retainer, right? (Just making sure.) 1. Yes, indeed. 2. I don't know for sure. Tourville Sr. was sent to the duke of Enghien (Louis II of Condé, his father being Henry II, my mistake) in 1641. It seems reasonable to assume that Tourville Sr. followed his master during the Fronde, but I do not have any proof for that. Jastrow|? 3 janvier 2006 à 16:29 (CET)

Tourville est avant tout le nom de neuf communes avec différents substantifs, dont Tourville-sur-Sienne, village de la Manche, d'où est précisément issu l'amiral. En dehors de cela, il y a (qui existe dans Wikipedia) un Charles Bertin Gaston Chapuis de Tourville. Il y a probablement quelque chose d'intelligent à faire pour accéder à tous ceux-ci par la recherche sur Tourville, mais je ne sais pas faire
