Description

A neighbour lighting firecrackers on my street in Chennai.

By the afternoon here the street was carpeted with the paper corpses and detritus of the thousands and thousands of crackers that had been lit off since pre-dawn (it was another of those poor sleep mornings). This went on solid for a couple days.

But can't beat ‘em, join ‘em, and who doesn't like crackers, fireworks and sparklers? So not wanting to miss the fun, we bought some and joined in the explosion-setting and ear-drum damaging fun. But for the cheap prices, we got far more crackers than we had the enthusiasm or hearing to light and gave some away to over-stimulated neighbourhood kids.

The fuses are short and these ones he was lighting were especially giant (and above the 125-decibel legal limit for officially approved crackers) so you got it lit and ran. Which, incidentally, is exactly the instructions on the package: "Set on ground. Light fuse. Get away quickly." Helpful, and accurate. The joyful panic of this was added to as we didn't know what exactly we had bought so what it might do once we lit it and the inconsistency in fuse burn rate, but no injuries were had.
