W.R. Burnett est un écrivain et scénariste américain né le 25 octobre 1899 à Springfield, Ohio (États-Unis), décédé le 25 avril 1982 à Santa Monica (États-Unis).

Après des études de journalisme il fait plusieurs petits métiers et écrit 5 romans qui ne trouvent pas d'éditeur. Il part alors pour Chicago où il peut observer le monde des truands et des trafics en tout genre. Il trouve alors inspiration et publie "Little Ceasar" qui remporte un vif succès. Après la réussite de l'adaptation au cinéma qui révèle E.G. Robinson il part pour Hollywood où il travaille sur le scénario ou l'adaptation de près de 50 films (Scarface) Il continue à publier des romans comme "The Asphalt Jungle" en 1949, premier tome d'une trilogie. Une douzaine seulement de ses livres sont traduits en français dans la collection de la "Série noire".
