English: Each color covers all parts of France which transportation time from Paris through SNCF's network is between x hours and x+1 hours. For instance, the lightest grey color is for parts of France less than one hour from Paris through the SNCF's network ; the darkest one, for parts of France more than 6 hours from Paris. The cities shown by a dot on this map are those which best travel time from Paris has been precisely checked. Prefectures are shown with a black dot, other important cities with a blue one.
Français : Chaque couleur correspond à toutes les régions du territoire français dont le temps de parcours depuis Paris par le réseau SNCF est compris entre x heures et x+1 heures. Par exemple, le gris le plus clair correspond aux régions situées à moins d'une heure de Paris ; le gris le plus foncé, à celles situées à plus de 6 heures de Paris. Les villes représentées par un point sur cette carte sont celles dont le meilleur temps de parcours depuis Paris a été précisément vérifié. Les préfectures sont indiquées en noir, les autres villes importantes en bleu.

[edit] Methodology / Méthodologie

Based on approximately 160 requests to the SNCF's website ([1]) for travel from Paris to main French cities on Wednesday, March 5, 2008. Each time, the best travel time on that day, including travel times using SNCF's buses, has been shown on this map. The requests have been made in late January / early February 2008.

All prefectures have been shown on this map, except Ajaccio and Bastia (in Corsica, so they cannot be reached from Paris using SNCF's network), Privas (no open train station), Bobigny, Créteil and Nanterre (too close to Paris). This map also shows approximately 70 other important cities, chosen because of their size, or because they are the only important city in a large part of France.

Other travel times (those that are not for cities marked with a dot) have not been checked on SNCF's website and are very approximate.
