Tarot est un groupe de heavy metal traditionnel finlandais créé dans les années 1980 par Tommi Salmela et Marco Hietala qui est également le bassiste attitré de Nightwish depuis 2002.

Les frères Hietala forment Tarot dans les années 1980. Initialement appelé Purgatory, le groupe devient Tarot après la signature avec une maison de disque. Le single Wings Of Darkness et leur premier album Spell Of Iron voient le jour en 1986. Un second single en 1987 et un second album en 1988 y succèdent. Puis un long break de 5 ans est entamé jusqu’en 1993, année au cours de laquelle sort l’album To Live Forever puis Stigmate en 1995 qui ont un gros succès au Japon.

Suite à un calendrier trop chargé, le cinquième album For The Glory Of Nothing ne sort qu’en 1998. Marco rejoint alors Conquest, Sinergy puis Nightwish en 2002. Il chante quelques titres sur l’album Virtuocity’s Secret Visions et les claviers interprétés par Janne Tolsa font plus nettement leur apparition. Tarot signe un nouveau contrat avec Spinefarm et l’album Suffer Our Pleasure sort en 2003. En fin d'année 2006, le groupe sort l'album Crows fly back, après un break de 3 ans pendant lequel Marco Hietala s'est investi davantage avec Nightwish. Tarot consacre l'année 2007 à une tournée en Europe (Earthshaker Roadshock Tour).
