[edit] Summary

Photo of St. Josemaria Escriva, used for the Official Prayer Card to St. Josemaria upon his Canonization in October 6, 2002 at St. Peter's Square, Rome. On that day Pope John Paul II called St. Josemaria "Saint of Ordinary Life."

The copyright holder, Communications Office of Opus Dei in Rome, granted, in their response to Wikipedia User: Walter Ching, permission for the image to be used under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, with this email:

On 7/14/2005 at 1:23 PM Communications Office of Opus Dei in Rome: You may upload pictures of St. Josemaria Escriva which are in the CD-Rom which you can access through the Opus Dei Information Office there. The photos in the CD-Rom have a clear copyright holder: Communications Office of Opus Dei in Rome. The CD-Rom includes: photo of St. Josemaria for the Official Prayer Card....

This is their response to my request letter patterned after the Wikipedia Letter of Request Form. I am in contact with the Communications Office of Opus Dei in my country which has the CD-Rom containing the photographs of St. Josemaria. My email letter of request contained the following paragraphs:

"Normally we ask permission for material to be used under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License. This means that although you retain the copyright and authorship of the photo, you are granting permission for all others (not just Wikipedia) to use, copy, and share your materials freely -- and even potentially use them commercially -- so long as they do not try to claim the copyright themselves, nor prevent others from using or copying them freely.
