Missy Elliott, surnommée la « Reine du Hip Hop » est productrice de jeunes chanteuses chanteurs comme Tweet, Young'C, ou la défunte Aaliyah. Elle a fait de nombreux featuring : Method Man du Wu Tang Clan, Aaliyah, Lil' Kim, Jay Z, la défunte Lisa « left eye » Lopes, Redman, Da Brat, Ginuwine, Elephant Man, Busta Rhymes, Nicole, OutKast, etc. et plus récemment Fatman Scoop et Ciara, avec qui elle gagne de nombreuses récompenses. Ces collaborations ont marqué sa carrière dans le monde du hip hop.

Dès son adolescence, elle admirait de grandes icônes de la musique comme Michael Jackson ou Diana Ross. Avec trois de ses amies, elle forme le groupe Fay Z puis R&B Sista. En 1991, le groupe obtient une audition chez Elektra Records mais aucun contrat n'aboutit.

En collaboration avec Tim Mosley alias Timbaland, elle participe à l'écriture de l'album de Jodeci. Grâce à cette expérience, ils signent des titres pour Aaliyah, 702, Ginuwine, SWV ou Gina Thompson. Missy Elliott produit avec son ami Timbaland son premier opus Supa Dupa Fly. Ce dernier entre directement troisième des charts US. L'album fait sensation pour l'originalité et la créativité qu'il en dégage. Grâce à ce succès, Missy Elliott co-produit les albums de Whitney Houston ou 702 et remixe des morceaux de Janet Jackson.

En 1999, elle sort Da Real World, dont le single All N My Grill lui ouvre les portes de l'Europe avec le remix en duo avec MC Solaar. En 2001, elle se consacre de nouveau à sa carrière et revient avec Missy E... So Addictive et Under Construction en 2002. L'album This Is Not A Test apparaît dans les bacs fin 2003. Et c’est le 5 Juillet 2005 que cette pointure du hip hop/R’n’B revient sur le devant de la scène avec la sortie de son nouvel album intitulé The Cookbook.
