The shape of our Galaxy as deduced from star counts by William Herschel in 1785; the solar system was assumed near center. (NOTE: The image shown is flipped 180 degrees on the horizontal axis from the original, as first published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 1785; the bifurcated arms of the illustration should be on the left.)

La forme de notre Galaxie déduite de comptages d'étoiles par William Herschel en 1785, le système solaire étant supposé près du centre. Herschel n'avait pas les distances des étoiles, avait supposé a) toutes les étoiles de même magnitude absolue, b) une décroissance de la distance proportionnelle à la magnitude, et enfin ne pouvait pas prendre en compte l'extinction.

This applies to the United States, Canada, the European Union and those countries with a copyright term of life of the author plus 70 years. Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 70 years: Mexico has 100 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term.
