Harry Carey est un acteur américain né le 16 janvier 1878 dans le Bronx quartier de New York aux États-Unis, décédé le 21 septembre 1947 à Brentwood en Californie.

Harry Carey est le premier grand cow-boy d'Hollywood. Il incarna le cavalier de l'Ouest dans de nombreux sérials muets pour Universal dont il était l'une des grandes stars. En incarnant Cheyenne Harry, il fit une série de films avec John Ford, alors réalisateur débutant. Il insista même auprès de Carl Laemmle pour imposer Ford. Une profonde amitié se lia entre les deux hommes. Mais, en 1921, suite suite à une brouille d'alcooliques, leur relation se détériore. Cependant, Ford ne manque pas de lui rendre hommage dans ses westerns classiques, le rappelant de temps à autre pour un petit rôle, faisant tourner son fils Harry Carey Jr., ou demandant à John Wayne de s'inspirer des attitudes et des démarches de Carey. Il lui dédie en 1948, le film Le Fils du désert.

Après les années de gloire du muet, Carey connait une carrière en dents de scie. Il parvient tout de même à incarner des rôles de premiers plans comme celui du Président du Sénat dans Mr. Smith au Sénat de Frank Capra, rôle qui lui vaut d'être nominé aux Oscars, ou encore dans le premier western d'Howard Hawks, La Rivière rouge.
