Kishimoto liked the presentation of these forms enough that he imitated one of them for the manga cover of volume 26.[6]

In the Naruto Collectible Card Game, most of Naruto's Ninja Cards are very similarly designed. Many of them focus on his being initially weak in stats, only getting stronger after being injured. His abilities focus on this, making him stronger based on moments of desperation (such as by exhausting the Deck or by using the opponent's advantages for Power).

In the 62nd episode of the Gintama anime, the protagonist Gintoki Sakata is shown saying "dattebayo" while reading an issue of Weekly Shonen Jump with Naruto on the cover.[7]

[modifier] Reception

Naruto has ranked within the Top 5 characters in every official Shonen Jump popularity poll, making first place twice[8] and the top two in the first five polls. However, in the sixth poll, in 2006, Naruto lost his top-two status to the characters Deidara, Kakashi and Sasuke.[9] There has not been another official poll since 2006. Due to the popularity of Naruto, several pieces of merchandise have been made into his likeness, such as plush,[10][11] key chains,[12] and numerous action figures,[13] in both his Naruto: Part I and Part II appearance.

In an interview, Maile Flanagan, who does the voice acting for Naruto in the English dub, states that she was thrilled to be chosen for the role of Naruto, despite having no idea who he was at first. She compares herself to Naruto during the interview, stating that both her and Naruto were hyperactive as children, and both always try to do their best. She also expresses her confidence in changing her voice to fit Naruto's age after the series' timeskip.[14] Junko Takeuchi, the seiyū for the character, comments that people are fascinated with Naruto because of how they think he's all cheer and fun, but in reality he's very harsh, while he accepts his past hardships and keeps going forward. She also comments she would like to make a song about his lonely past, as she did with him in the OVA before the first Naruto movie.[15]

Several popular websites for manga, anime, video games, and other subjects praise Naruto highly, often calling him one of the most memorable anime and manga characters in history. IGN has commented on Naruto developing from the lonely rebel during the series' beginning.[16] GameSpot claims that Naruto lives the ideal teenage life, as he is a ninja and eats all he likes, but, on the other hand, he is parentless and is shunned by the other villagers.[17] Anime News Network, however, comments that sometimes (especially in the Chunin Exams) Naruto's fights are not as good as others fought by the Konoha 11,[18] but they remark his fight against Gaara as one of his best moments in the series.[19] T.H.E.M. Anime Reviews noted that while Naruto is a "likeable enough scamp", his type of character has been done before in many previous anime and manga series.[20]
