English: On 5th October 1804, the Spanish frigate Mercedes is blown up at the battle of Cape St. Mary as depicted. Alongside was the Amphion; only 40 of Mercedes crew were rescued by the Amphion’s boats. Captain Graham Moore commanded the four British frigates. This was the incident that caused the declaration of war by Spain to the United Kingdom in 1804. Painting by Francis Sartorius at the National Maritime Museum.
