British revolver Enfield No. 2 Mk I** Tanker Model Snub-Nose 2". These double-action only revolvers were originally fitted with 5" barrels, and issued to tank crews and other troops by the British Army in World War 2. The 2" barrel version is a post-war commercial modification that was done in the early 1960's by a gunsmith in Los Angeles, probably one M.L. Johnson, now deceased. The work is so well done that these guns are usually mistaken for some sort of official variant, but while the 2" version is fairly scarce, it is not and never was an "issue" military or police weapon of any kind. Probably fewer than 500 of these modified Enfield #2's exist.
The barrel was cut off and recrowned: the front sight was relocated by milling the bottom to match the contour of the barrel stump and brazing or silver soldering it in place. Close examination will always show a "seam" under the front sight on these guns: in the original 5" length, the front sight was forged integrally with the barrel and there is no seam visible.
More information on these revolvers can be found at http://www.nrvoutdoors.com. They guns were retailed by Seaport Traders (who had similar modifications done on S&W "Victory" model revolvers, also ex-military guns, by M.L. Johnson) and possibly by one or two other outlets in the days when guns were sold by mail.
