Bobby and the Midnites étaient un groupe de rock mené par Bob Weir des Grateful Dead. Le groupe était le projet latéral principal du Bob Weir pendant la première moitié des années 80. groupe a sortid eux albums, mais était surtout connu pour leurs concerts . Avec une section rythmique faite du vétéran de jazz Billy Cobham et, pendant un certain temps, Alphonso Johnson, Bobby and the Midnites ont joué de rock influencée par jazz-rock fusion.

En 1978, Bob Weir avait mené un projet latéral appelé Bob Weir Band qui a joué un certain nombre de concerts. Sans compter Bob Weir , deux autres membres de Bobby and the Midnites venait du groupe Bob Weir Band. Le premier était le guitariste et chanteur Bobby Cochran.L'autre était Brent Mydland, qui avait joué avec le Grateful Dead.

Matthew Kelly a joué de la guitare de l'harmonica et des Congas. Il avait déjà joué avec Bob Weir dans Kingfish. Ce groupe avait été fondé par Dave Torbert en 1973, et Bob Weir y avait joué de 1974 à 1976.

Le guitariste basse Tim Bogert se joint au groupe. Il avait précédemment participé à Vanilla Fudge et Beck, Bogert & Appice.

La batterie était tenu par Billy Cobham, fortement influencé par le jazz, il avait joué avec Miles Davis et the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Le premier concert de The Bobby and the Midnites eu lieu au Golden Bear à Huntington Beach en Californie, le 30 juin 1980. Le groupe a joué en concert du milieu de 1980 au début 1981. A cette époque, Alphonso Johnson a remplacé Bogert à la basse. Johnson avait joué dans Weather Reportet avec Cobham au CBS All-Stars. Cette configuration légèrement révisée de Bobby and the Midnites a enregistré le premier album éponyme.

Bobby and the Midnites n'a pas joué de concert jusqu'à l'année suivante. Brent Mydland et Matthew Kelly ont fait parti de la formation avec Dave Garland qui s'était joint au groupe .Garland a chanté et a joué des claviers et du saxophone ténor . Commençant en janvier 1982, le groupe a réalisé beaucoup de concert à une période où le Grateful Dead n'était pas en tournée. Une vidéo de concert de Bobby and the Midnites est sorti en 1991.

En mars de 1983, le groupe a connu son dernier changement de musicien quand Kenny Gradney, venant de Little Feat, a remplacé Johnson à la basse. Le groupe a continué les tournées , jouant beaucoup de concert .En 1984, il a sorti un deuxième album studio. Le dernier concert de Bobby and the Midnites a eu lieu à étaient au Rio à New York le 30 septembre 1984.
