[modifier] Histoire

During the 1914 - 1918 World War the area near Binarville was the scene of a noted engagement involving troops of the 77th Division of the American Expeditionary Forces AEF. The Argonne Forest which surrounds Binarville had been fortified by German troops during four years of the war - the difficult terrain, thick forest and strong fortifications resulted in the Argonne being a "quiet sector" with relatively little fighting. During the Autumn of 1918 as the American forces entered the line, the left wing of the American army was assigned to advance in this sector.

In the first week of October, 1918 the 77th Division attacked the German positions near Binarville. The 308th Infantry Battalion (with some other units) moved forward rapidly, but was cut off and surrounded as Allied attacks to their left and right were held back. For five days they maintained a heroic defense until other troops of their division were able to break through and relieve them. The 308th Battalion and other units involved suffered very heavy losses. This is one of the most famous incidents in the participation of the American forces in WW I.
