Amy Robsart était la femme de Robert Dudley (1532-1558). Ce dernier était l'un des favoris de Elisabeth I (1533-1603). On trouva Amy Robsart morte dans des conditions douteuses (une chute dans les escaliers). Elisabeth qui avait peut être l'intention d'épouser Dudley, préféra ne pas se marier avec ce dernier de peur que cela entache considérablement sa réputation. De nombreuses oeuvres, dont une pièce de théâtre, écrite par Victor Hugo lui ont été consacrées.
