Mamou est une ville de la paroisse d'Evangeline, en Louisiane, au sud des États-Unis.

Although Mamou has been translated as " mammoth," "papaw", and "village site", I am inclined to accept the translation offered by Mr. A.C. Morris of Ruston whose father and uncle both spoke Mobilienne - the lingua franca of the Indian tribe of the Gulf States. Mr. Morris wrote the following to me: "As to the word Mamou, it is an Indian word and incidentally that is where I was born and reared. Not the town of Mamou but in the Prairie, from which the town took its name. As I recall, my father said Mamou meant Big Hunting Ground which would correspond fairly well to our Big Prairie or open spaces. Judy Smith, Head Louisiana Section State Library of Louisiana P.O.
