L'Américain Roy C. Farrell et l'Australien Sydney H. de Kantzow fondent la Cathay Pacific Airways à Hong Kong le 24 septembre 1946. Initialement basés à Shanghai, les 2 hommes d'affaires déménagent finalement à Hong Kong et fondent Cathay Pacific Airways. À l’époque, la flotte se limitait à un seul Douglas DC3, tout juste démobilisé. La flotte s'étend maintenant à plus de 100 appareils.

Le 9 juin 2006, Cathay Pacific, Swire Pacific, Air China, CNAC et CITIC Pacific ont conclu un accord modifiant la structure de l’actionnariat de Cathay Pacific, Dragonair et Air China. Selon cet accord sujet , Dragonair est devenue une filiale à 100% de Cathay Pacific.
