Bonjour. Je suis un rédacteur sur le Wikipédia anglais. Mon nom d'utilisateur est "SigPig". Veuillez excuser mon français faible. Me diriez-vous, svp: Quelle est l'etymologie du "Côte-d'Or"? Est-ce que il traduise à "Gold Coast" en anglais? Merci beaucoup. 24.42.94.25 31 mars 2006 à 22:42 (CEST)

The name comes from the creation of the French départements back in 1790. A local politician, I guess a deputy, proposed this name. It comes from the region south of Dijon composed of a hill where the vineyard are plenty. Named La Côte (the Hill), it goes from Dijon to Beaune (40kms?). During Fall, it takes a nice golden colour, due to the vine leaves. Therefore the name golden hill, or "Côte d'Or".

This politician also proposed the name "Côte d'Azur" for the French Riviera, which became the name of the region (Provence-Alpe-Côte d'Azur), but in this case "côte" means coast.
