[modifier] 2 Questions

English / l'anglais

First of all, I have to say that this bistro is a great idea. Sourire

I have two questions:

  1. If it doesn't violate any French copyright laws, can a picture of Steeve Estatof and his album À L’Envers be uploaded on the French and English Wikipedias? I am working on an article about him on the English Wikipedia and would like to use them to expand the article further. I'm pretty sure they would also be useful on the French Wikipedia too.
  2. Are there any good methods to achieve fluency in a foreign language? I don't know what methods of study work best and I need to learn French so I can work on this Wikipedia (obviously Sourire).

Any help would be appriciated. Thank you and happy new year (eve)! --Evan Robidoux 1 janvier 2007 à 02:35 (CET)

1 - It violates French copyright laws and French Wikipedia guidelines
2 - I don't know
Happy new year,
--
Denis Dordoigne (discuter) 1 janvier 2007 à 09:16 (CET)
Sorry, I didn't know that. Thank you for telling me that though. I was just a bit unsure because the English Wikipedia has this "fair use policy" which allows copyrighted images if they are sourced, etc. and wasn't sure if there was one here or not. Please accept my apology.
I also have one more question - can English sources be used on the French Wikipedia and if not, where can I find French sources?
Thanks again.

--Evan Robidoux 1 janvier 2007 à 23:01 (CET)

yes, english sources can be used (however, you should try to pu a french one if it exists). Where can you find french sources is a more difficult question to answer, I would say you should find them in the same places as the english ones : library, internet...Mort de rire There's a contributor's library : Wikipédia:Bibliothèque. I could help you with your answer better if you'd say what kind of material you're looking for. فاب | so‘hbət | 10 janvier 2007 à 10:02 (CET)

2. There's a quite efficient method indeed : the Pillow Dictionary. More seriously, spending a year in the country, less if you studied the language before. — Régis Lachaume 10 janvier 2007 à 18:37 (CET)

As for the sources, foreign languages are accepted. There's some debate whether second or third hand sources in French should be preferred to first hand ones in another tongue. (IM(NS)HO both could be used at the same time to appease monolinguals.) — Régis Lachaume 10 janvier 2007 à 18:43 (CET) about number 2, did you try any combination of immersion in the language, reading wikipedia in french :), buying a textbook, taking classes, etc? Don't do just one of these, pick a combination. good luck!

[modifier] Politique d'images

フランス語 (furansugo) désigne plutôt le français de France, alors que 仏語 (futsugo) désigne le français tout court.

La différence est que 仏語 est une bête abréviation de フランス語 dû à une phonétique heureuse (futsu/furansu).
  • contrairement à ce que tu dis, ces termes sont parfaitement synonymes. Si la nuance que tu donnes existait en japonais, elle ne manquerait pas de figurer dans les articles ja:フランス語 et ja:仏語 qui disent 「略して仏語とも書く」). Plusieurs linguistes japonais/français que j'ai consulté m'ont affirmé la même chose ;
  • le kanji fait de toutes façons référence à la France : 佛欄西, le premier caractère s'étant simplifié après la Seconde Guerre mondiale en . 仏語 signifie bien « la langue de la France ») et ceci met vraiment à mal ton explication « "la langue française" (futsugo) ne signifie pas "la langue parlée en France" (furansugo) » qui pêche par un manque d'approfondissement ;
--Sixsous  21 janvier 2007 à 04:53 (CET)
Bon, ça va, on a compris...
馬の耳に念仏, ou comment résumer certaines discussions de wikipédia.

I came across the article of that former professor of the Université Montpellier I. I have some doubts here because the birth place Gordon-en-Rouergue (around 1258) isn't mentioned in any Wikipédia at all. Could someone help me here? --32X 7 février 2007 à 15:05 (CET)

Hi! Sorry very not well i english speake. A lot of french toponyms today wrotten with ou where formerly only with o wrotten, so Gordon could be now Gourdon, in ancient province Rouergue, today département of Lot, 1°22'55"E ; 44°44'13"N. It is only a possibility, I don't have any ancient map of this area. In the name Bernard de Gordon, "de Gordon" can indicate only the origin, without any idea of nobility, so the name of the town can have change independently of the man's one.88.165.212.52

Sur la page Благоевград , la photo Картинка:Blagoevgrad Bistrica.jpg est affichée d'une manière identique avec дясно au lieu de right pour le côté droit 88.165.212.52 7 mars 2007 à 21:39 (CET)

[modifier] Occupation translations

Hi.

I'm not sure where to ask this, and I'm sorry I don't write in French. If I could, I would also probably not be here. I just wanted to ask a 'faveur'. I've opened up a translation wiki. It's build up to help IMDb users contribute non english credit lists. If you are interested in contributing to this project, then I've put together the 30 most common Occupations used on IMDb. You can translate them right here and I'll put them into the wiki, but it's also very easy to do it at the wiki, where you can also translate a lot more then just these 30, but it would be nice to at least start off with the most common ones and then start thinking about all the others. Here's the link: imdb.wikia.com and here are the Occupations needing translation:

  1. casting director directeur de casting (man) or directrice de casting (woman). Often, you'll see Distribution : Pierre Chombier (distribution = casting).
  2. cinematographer = directeur de la photographie
  3. composer compositeur (man) or compositrice (woman). Often : Musique : Pierre Chombier or Bande originale : Pierre Chombier.
  4. costume designer costumier (man) or costumière (woman). Often : Costumes : Pierre Chombier
  5. director = réalisateur
  6. editor = monteur
  7. electrician = électricien
  8. first assistant director = premier assistant réalisateur
  9. gaffer chef électricien (man or woman)
  10. grip machiniste
  11. hair stylist = coiffeur
  12. makeup artist maquilleur (man) or maquilleuse (woman). Often : Maquillage : Pierre Chombier.
  13. production designer = chef décorateur
  14. production manager = directeur de la production
  15. script supervisor = superviseur de script
  16. set decorator = décorateur de plateau
  17. sound = opérateur de prise son
  18. sound editor = monteur de son
  19. sound mixer = mixeur
  20. sound recordist
  21. special effects effets spéciaux
  22. still photographer = photographe
  23. stunts cascadeur (stuntman) or cascadeuse (stuntwoman).
  24. stunt coordinator responsable des cascades
  25. stunt double doublure cascades
  26. unit manager
  27. writer = scénariste

Thank you for your time. --Steinninn 17 mai 2007 à 15:51 (CEST)

PS:Please don't be afraid to write many alternitive translations, especially those that are seen on screen. Basically we want people to be able to copy past exactly what the see on screen and be able to find out what that occupation means. --Steinninn 17 mai 2007 à 17:09 (CEST)
I think it's good ... Stef48 Mende, 21 mai 2007 à 19:08 (CEST)

Thank you all for your help. I have submitted all the translated that have been put here as of today. If you would like to make any changes then I suggest you do it at the IMDb Wikia since I will not be monitoring any changes made to the list above. Again, thanks so much. --Steinninn 22 mai 2007 à 03:53 (CEST)

[modifier] Stone of Terpon

I am trying to resolve what may be an archaeological factoid or an urban legend regarding something called the "Stone of Terpon." As I had understood it, this was excavated a number of years ago in the vicinity of the old seawall in Antibes on the Côte d'Azur. The information, for which I have to rely on my memory as I can no longer recover the source, is that it was a fairly sizeable phallic symbol that had been used to mark an ancient Greek brothel.

Here's my tentative Wikipedia entry [quote]: The Stone of Terpon is an ancient artifact excavated near the seawall of Antibes, France. It’s carved in a supposedly phallic shape (23" long, 8" thick, 73 lbs.), with text in a Greek dialect: "I am Terpon, servant of noble Aphrodite, may Kyris therefore give grace to those who entrusted me with this task." It is believed to have once marked the entrance to a brothel. The original is in a private collectiion, but a copy is displayed in the Musée d’Histoire et d’Archéologie adjacent to that same seawall in Antibes. [end quote]

73 Lb comes to a bit over 33 Kg, if that's any help.

Adding to my overall confusion, I recovered from Insight Guide/The French Riviera, 1999 edition: "...Museum of Art, History and Archaeology. Among its numerous Roman artifacts is one which gives an evocative glimpse of Antibes' past--the charming 3rd-century Roman stela to the slave child, a dancer named Septentrion, whose Latin funerary inscription reads: 'To the Manes of the child Septentrion aged twelve who at the theatre at Antibes on two days danced and gave pleasure.'"

This raises the possibility that there is only one artifact and that one description is a garbled version of the other.

Does anyone have some straight information? Ideally, someone residing in or near the French Riviera has visited the museum and can merely consult a museum catalogue or a visitor's guide to their collection. The stone of Terpon and the stela of "puer Septentrion" (child Septentrion) are two unrelated artefacts. The stone of Terpon is a greek religious stone, Terpon being an alternative name for Eros, god of love, said in some lores to be a son of Aphrodite. The stone was found in 1866 and is believed to have been made in the 5th century BC. The stela of Septentrion is written in latin and was made much later, after the conquest of the area by the Romans.
It's not "Kyris" but Kypris (the one from Cyprus), i.e. Aphrodite, born from the sea, according to the tradition, on the west shore of this island, precisely at the Petra Tou Romiou.
The translations I've found about the text carved on the stone say "I'm Terpon, servant of noble Aphrodite, may Kypris reward with her favor those who have placed me there." Stones as a material presence of a god are quite common in ancient Greece (let's say -700). When the stone of Terpon was made, it was already the use to represent the god with a "real statue" placed close to the stone, or to replace the stone with a statue. It's pure speculation from my humble self, but perhaps a statue was there and was stolen or destroyed, while the stone was simply discarded. But I was not there to watch the digging back in 1866, and the archeologist of this time didn't bother much about the context of what they found.
The study of this stone was made and published in 1874 by a man named Heuzey, in the book XXXV of the Mémoires de la Société des Antiquaires de France (an important publication about archeology at this time, it should be quite easy to find it in French archives of regional or national importance). [modifier] semi protection

Hello, in de:Wikipedia:Fragen zur Wikipedia#Französische WP (diff) a user wants to know if it is normal here when an article and the article's talk page are semi protected (without any signs of vandalism) and when aditionally the talk page of the protecting admin is semi protected, too. The pages in question are Aavasaksa, Discuter:Aavasaksa and Discussion Utilisateur:Clem23. --32X 27 septembre 2007 à 13:35 (CEST)

According to this diff, semi-protection was installed in reaction to some repetitive intervention, which has been cancelled out of the page history. I can't say more about this, but here has probably been some vandalism, presently not accessible to non-admins. Touriste 27 septembre 2007 à 13:39 (CEST)
Non admins can only see the log of this page. Vandalisms were very violent insults towards some contributors that had to be purged (thus are not visible anymore), and then to avoid a third purge semi-protection was installed for 2 months. Clem23 27 septembre 2007 à 14:18 (CEST)

[modifier] Question About Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Article

Quick Background: I am a native English speaker, and I have learned some French for personal reasons. I like to visit the French Wikipedia, because it offers so many rich articles and perspectives. It is also an excellent way to develop my French linguistic skills.

Question: I was reading the article about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (en français), and I immediately noticed that he was being referred to as a "militant pour les droits civiques." I interpreted this to mean that he was being referred to as a militant in the English sense of the word (which is completely and utterly false). Does this phrase have different implications in French?

J'apprécie votre attention à cette question.

Hi. I think there is a slight difference in meaning. The French word does not always imply the use of force as a mean to achieve its (political) goals, and I think (correct me if I am wrong) that the English term does. In French, it simply means "someone who actively defends a cause, an idea". You can read an exact definition on http://atilf.atilf.fr/dendien/scripts/tlfiv5/visusel.exe?12;s=2590322640;r=1;nat=;sol=2; « Qui agit pour faire reconnaître ses idées, pour les faire triompher. » (approximatively translated: "someone who acts to make his ideas acknowledged, to make them triumph") R@vən (d) 6 mars 2008 à 16:58 (CET)

It is true that in English "militant" always has an aggressive or violent connotation. I am glad to know that this is not the idea being conveyed in the article. Merci beaucoup pour votre aide.

Militant comes from the verb militer, which meant in Old French "to make war" (from Latin miles, "soldier"). The English meaning is closer to the original meaning of the word. R@vən (d) 6 mars 2008 à 23:26 (CET)
Militant in French is better understood as "Activist" in english.

[modifier] Bac à sable - Sandbox

Is one permitted to create a personal sandbox page on French Wikipedia, as on English Wikipedia? If so, what is the approved method? Thankyou. Utilisateur:Retarius | Discussion 12 mars 2008 à 06:22 (CET)

Sure. I guess the best way to do it is to create a subpage like Utilisateur:Retarius/Sandbox (click on the red link and create the page). Link it fom your user page for simplicity and that's it. Tizeff (d) 12 mars 2008 à 11:18 (CET)
It is totally approved to create a personal sandbox, especially if your french is not so good. Create a special user page named Utilisateur:Retarius/Sandbox or Utilisateur:Retarius/Bac à sable (french version). Guérin Nicolas     12 mars 2008 à 18:01 (CET)
Thankyou both for your assistance. I have created a "Bac à sable" page (as you can see). I'll do my best to use as much French as I can on this site; to fit in and also to develop my knowledge of the language (I mean in places other than articles of course - I understand that any contributions there should be exclusively in French!). I have a basic understanding of written French but at this point, for the sake of speed (and avoiding giving unintended offence) I'll confine myself to writing English.
I would like to transfer some material to my user pages here from my pages at the English Wikipedia. I notice that some of the coding conventions are different on this site. Is it okay to do this? Utilisateur:Retarius | Discussion 13 mars 2008 à 04:12 (CET)
Hallo to Perth Clin d'œil, usually it's ok if you transfer material on your user's page, what kind of coding conventions exactly you speak about? Guérin Nicolas     13 mars 2008 à 08:52 (CET)
Hallo from Perth, Western Australia to Switzerland! I noticed that wiki-markup seems to have slightly different codes here, e.g. using & #124; for | in signature blocks and I thought there might be other differences that might cause system problems in copying blocks of text from say, a user page. [modifier] Advice about the Japanese naming notation template

I noticed on FR that the Japanese name notation template is different than on EN, DE, etc. It involves switching the order of the actual Japanese characters in order to match the Western roman order.

On the other hand, EN does this: Junichiro Koizumi (小泉 純一郎, Koizumi Jun'ichirō - EN keeps the Japanese characters in the native order AND gives a Hepburn transliteration of the said Japanese characters.

The FR practice is almost never done, and Kanji is always correctly displayed family name first.

I previously made this point on the French language Bistro, but the discussion never went anywhere. I want to try again and have a definitive conclusion for the proposal (Approve or Disapprove) - Should someone translate this into French and post this on the French bistro page? Or should I post this in English? WhisperToMe (d) 18 mars 2008 à 00:43 (CET)

You spoke about it on the Projet:Japon page. It was replied :
« No, WhisperToMe, refrain editing unilaterally the template. This has been disputed quite a few times (see for instance in related talks: Wikipédia:Prise de décision/Noms propres étrangers, Discussion Wikipédia:Prise de décision/Transcription du japonais, Discussion Wikipédia:Intitulé des noms étrangers,...). See ? And your « I decided that FR.Wikipedia should adopt the English Wikipedia's convention » is not how we work here. Beside, the nji order is used since so long... you'd have a boatload of articles to fix to your taste (that's not just the template). If you're not ready for that (discussion, collaboration, consensus, and further article maintenance), then please keep editing on your favorite wikipedia chapter. Benjamin.pineau 14 septembre 2007 à 11:31 (CEST) »
I am well aware that unilateral editing is not done on FR. I am perfectly fine with collaboration and consensus (I have done this on many scenarios on EN). :) WhisperToMe (d) 18 mars 2008 à 10:16 (CET)
If you really want to change it now the only way is to open a PDD. - Zil (d) 18 mars 2008 à 07:34 (CET)
How do I open a PDD? How does the process work? WhisperToMe (d) 18 mars 2008 à 10:16 (CET)
You need to go to this page : WP:PDD to open it. There, you've got more or less how it works. Only, in french... But, as the subject has been already decided, as French is not your mother language, I warn you that you may be bitten. I'm not really sure this is a good idea. - Zil (d) 18 mars 2008 à 10:29 (CET)
I'll find someone to translate my statements and I will post the actual proposal French. I will say that I do not know French and that the French was translated by someone else. Regardless, whether I know French or not should not be a point of discussion; the point is the idea and people should talk about the idea. If people talk about the man it becomes an ad hominem and it completely misses the point. As long as people focus on the idea (the proposal, the concept) and whether the concept works, it will be okay. Also, "as the subject has been already decided" should not be necessarily a reason as consensus can change. Decision A can be made, but two years later it can shift to Decision B. What I will do is make a draft of a proposal and then have it translated in French once the wording is fine. Does this sound good? :) WhisperToMe (d) 18 mars 2008 à 10:47 (CET)
This is the French speaking encyclopedia. An encyclopedia made by French speaking people for French speaking people... I haven't an opinion on whether we should or not do the change you're pushing... But, I've got one on whom should decide it. Someone outside of the French speaking community, we'll receive a cold welcome. Specially, if you state something like : EN keeps the Japanese characters in the native order AND gives a Hepburn transliteration of the said Japanese characters. I'd just give you my point of view. Feel free to do as you want. - Zil (d) 18 mars 2008 à 10:57 (CET)
I am aware that this is a French-speaking encyclopedia and that the Wikis differ. The importance of the EN structure has nothing to do with the English language and the French language structure has nothing to do with the French language. It has to do with presentation of the Japanese characters. The point is not that EN.Wikipedia uses it. The point is that the structure that happens to be used by EN works better than the structure used by FR. So, then I should not say that EN uses it - But I should simply say the proposed style is better than the current style and present as not associated with any such language. Anyhow I will begin the proposal and I would like some input on how to word it :) WhisperToMe (d) 18 mars 2008 à 11:16 (CET)

---

I propose that the presentation of modern Japanese names should be changed to the following format:

  • Name in Western order (Japanese characters in Japanese order Hepburn romanization transliteration)

The current FR format uses this:

  • Name in Western order (Japanese characters in Western order)

It is common for Japanese names to be expressed in a Western order in Indo-European languages. However switching kanji to reflect an Indo-European naming order is almost never done. Kanji are always presented in Japanese order in every situation.

When a Western person sees the Japanese text he or she will assume that the Japanese text is the way the person's name is written in Japanese. Therefore the Japanese text should be presented in the order used in Japan. This order differs from the order used in Western languages, but this can be explained with a footnote. I am aware that the current format uses a footnote to explain why the kanji are reversed, but this format is pointless because the "switched kanji format" is never used in the real world. "Junichiro Koizumi" is often seen in the real world, but "純一郎 小泉" is not.

--

However I have an alternate proposal.

One could take the French template and add a comma in between the kanji like this (純一郎, 小泉) - It disrupts the flow of the kanji and it reminds the person that the name is likely not in its native order and not as usually presented. It is like "Smith, John" - It tells the person that the name as presented is intentionally out of order. If you like that idea better I could present this instead. WhisperToMe (d) 18 mars 2008 à 11:16 (CET)

I told you that I don't have an opinion on the change you're speaking about...
Quick translation :

---

---

To be less intrusive, instead of doing a PDD, I would do a sondage (polls). It is on the same page... Check the format of the current ones. I could help you with any translation. - Zil (d) 18 mars 2008 à 13:58 (CET)

[modifier] Translation request - for the Sondage on Japanese names

I placed this in the talk page but I would like to see this in French on the actual sondage page.

  • Regarding choosing which people to have their names represented in Western order and which people to represent in Japanese order one could use the first year of Meiji as the dividing line: People born BEFORE 1868 are in Japanese order and people born on 1868 or afterwards are in Western order.

[modifier] Regarding the relationship of a person's actions and a person's idea

I have started a separate discussion so that this does not affect the proposal discussion. Bertrand Bellet told me about this: "On the discussion, DarkoNeko bluntly said you annoyed him greatly and it would influence his opinion ; I was surprised enough to check old discussions. To be frank I found that you had been very vocal about the question (according to my feel of French wiki standards, at any rate) and I understand how it could have alienated some people. Nonetheless, however offhand your ways may be felt, it has nothing to do with your point being relevant or not : this is what I wrote." If this is indeed the case:

  • I did not intend for my ways to feel offhand and I am trying to correct this by using a different approach. Maybe I came on too strongly in my wording, but I am now trying to change this. My past errors should not poison the issue at hand. In logic classes there is mention of the ad hominem:
    • "An ad hominem argument, also known as argumentum ad hominem (Latin: "argument to the man", "argument against the man") consists of replying to an argument or factual claim by attacking or appealing to a characteristic or belief of the person making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim. The process of proving or disproving the claim is thereby subverted, and the argumentum ad hominem works to change the subject."
  • I feel therefore that Darkoneko's argument consists of or is affected by an ad hominem argument. This makes the discussion off topic and this is what happened last time. This time I am rejecting my old techniques and I am asking Darkoneko to please "forgive" me and move on. This time the discussion should be on topic and focus on the argument and not the person making the argument. WhisperToMe (d) 21 mars 2008 à 20:28 (CET)
Ce sondage est une vaste rigolade
This pool is not serious
  • His autor doesn't speak French and he's used to "I came to correct what I don't like on frwiki"(I always fell that as "I'm coming to explain civilization to native people " but I had some bias Last time failed, so he tries something else...
  • There is no proposal without Hepburn transliterration all proposal are on the same shape (name in romanji, then kanji, then2nd times the name in the japonese way) (Template in use on en), so the result of this polls will be with bias.
  • par exemple, il n'y a pas de proposition : "prenom nom (kanji_prénom kanji_nom)" / "nom prenom (kanji_nom kanji_prénom)" ou encore "prenom nom (kanji_nom kanji_prénom)"
  • for instance, there is no proposal like : "first_name last_name (kanji_first_name kanji_last_name)" / "last_name first_name (kanji_last_name kanji_first_name)" ou encore "first_name last_name (kanji_last_name kanji_first_name)"
Enfin bref.
To be honest, I can't stand the autor of this poll and my judgement is impacted. Question is : Do you find those arguments valid or not...

[modifier] Interlanguage links to Vikidia, the kids' encyclopedia in French

I was looking for a Simple French Wikipedia but there isn't one per se. But just now, I found out there's something similar: Vikidia, the kids' encyclopedia in French. There are no [Aide:Lien inter-langue|interlanguage links / liens inter-langues] (ILLs) pointing to it.

I know the ILL system is currently only used for links between official Wikipedias. But think Vikidia is the closest thing to a Simple French Wikipedia that will ever be created: now that it exists, nobody will start a Simple French Wikipedia; if they say they want to start one, as some people have, it's probably because they don't know that Vikidia exists.

So, do you agree with me that we should ask the developers to change the settings so that pages here on French Wikipedia can have ILLs to Vikidia? It will make many more people realize that Vikidia exists.

Why not incorporate material about Relations between Japan and South Korea? Then it can cover both sides of the peninsula and the article can be linked to the following: en:Japan-Korea relations ko:한일 관계 ja:日朝関係史

I'm a bit upset for last time, when an administrator deleted the page without consulting anyone. So I hope you'll find someone to read and apply what's on your post Sourire, I won't. Sora Saoirse [ditiramber] 3 mai 2008 à 09:44 (CEST)

[modifier] google translation toolbar like web portal for quick English meanings of French words in web pages

Hi there,

How many of you use the French Wikipedia to brush up on that high school French, but need to constantly lookup French words for English meanings. The Google translation toolbar only translates from English to French, not from French to English. (Their whole web page translation is not what I want, I want to read the French).

I have prepared a webpage portal that allows the French Wikipedia to be viewed. From there, a right click on a word in the fr.wikipedia.org will pop up the English meaning. The portal with explanation of how to use it is at:

http://www.securecottage.com/cgi-bin/dictionary.cgi

There are other languages involved, but I use it mainly for French. I am wondering if there is a need or wish for a utility like this. For the intermediate French learner who can get the sense of a sentence but still needs to lookup a lot of words to understand the whole meaning.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Paul Cheffers xxxx@xxxxxx.xxxx

I think most of us are doing fine with their French, thank you. You may want to post this on the English Wikipedia, though. Popo le Chien ouah 12 mai 2008 à 09:53 (CEST)
Nice tool ! I already have used popup translators, such as the sensagent one (Alexandria) : you have to put this on your monobook.js (I hope it still works). They are great tools for page translations .. regards --Zedh msg 12 mai 2008 à 10:36 (CEST)

Hi there,

Please excuse my English.

How many of you use the Japanese Wikipedia to brush up on that high school Japanese, but need to constantly lookup Japanese words for English meanings. The Google translation toolbar only translates from English to Japanese, not from Japanese to English. (Their whole web page translation is not what I want, I want to read the Japanese).

I have prepared a webpage portal that allows the Japanese Wikipedia to be viewed. From there, a right click on a word in the es.wikipedia.org will pop up the English meaning. The portal with explanation of how to use it is at:

http://www.securecottage.com/cgi-bin/dictionary.cgi

There are other languages involved. French to English is the default translation, but there is a combo box that allows Japanese to English. I am wondering if there is a need or wish for a utility like this. For the intermediate Japanese learner who can get the sense of a sentence but still needs to lookup a lot of words to understand the whole meaning.

It is like rikai-san but it is not a toolbar.

Any feedback would be appreciated.
